Earthquakes are common in Guerrero, as the state is located in a seismically active area.

In September 2021, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Guerrero, causing widespread damage and killing at least 3 people.

The SSN recommends that people be prepared for earthquakes and know what to do in the event of an earthquake.

Here are some tips from the SSN on what to do in an earthquake:

  • Stay calm and don't panic.
  • Drop to the ground, cover your head and neck, and hold on to something sturdy until the shaking stops.
  • If you are indoors, stay away from windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
  • If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
  • Once the shaking stops, be aware of your surroundings and check yourself for injuries.
  • If you see any downed power lines or damaged buildings, stay away and report them to the authorities.
  • Be prepared for aftershocks.
